Boxes and Chests with traditional carved kerfs typical of old steam Bent Boxes
,Bowls and ChestsThe original design and technology of these boxes and chests were very well thought out.
By using a specially prepared red or yellow cedar board and very carefully measuring and marking out three slots or kerfs with a special shape, carving them, which depended on purpose, style and visibility, could contain either food stuffs or water .
Steaming and carefully closing the board into itself , the end formed a joint which was originally sewn shut then later pegged and doweled, with an attached form fitting bottom and sometimes tight fitting lid. This was an expert’s skill and took years to master properly. The idea was to get the woodfibres to bend around a radius without breaking and to have a pleasant feel to the piece.
